As new and innovative treatments have surfaced to help us turn back the hands of time, from units of Botox to dermal fillers to laser treatments, some funny names have emerged to refer to the lines and wrinkles that form. Read on to learn what some of them are and how to treat them…

As we age, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form. With time, the fine lines and wrinkles become more noticeable and deeper. As a result, individuals often turn to cosmetic can and aesthetic treatments to rejuvenate and repair the skin while also taking measures to slow the aging process. Dermal fillers and units of Botox are examples of treatments commonly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles.

Factors that contribute to formation of lines and wrinkles

Sun damage (please use sunscreen!) and certain lifestyle choices, such as smoking and poor diet, can contribute to premature aging. Repetitive muscle movement also contributes to the formation of lines and wrinkles over time. Dynamic wrinkles result from this repetitive muscle movement.

As part of the natural aging process, our bodies also produce less collagen, which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance that hydrates and plumps the skin. HA also decreases as we age, which can lead to a hollow or sunken look for areas of the face, as well as lines and wrinkles.

Common nomenclatures for facial lines and wrinkles

Dealing with lines and wrinkles as we get older is a natural part of life. As new and innovative treatments have surfaced to help us turn back the hands of time, some funny names have emerged to refer to the lines and wrinkles that form. Bunny lines, crow’s feet, cobblestone chin, parenthesis, and the 11s are common names used for wrinkles on the face. So, what do they all mean?!

Crow’s Feet (outside corner of eyes)

Crow’s feet is what we call those pesky little lines that form on the outside corners of our eyes. They are caused by repetitive facial expressions, such as smiling and squinting. The number of units of Botox for crow’s feet is typically 5 to 15 for each eye.

Bunny Lines (lines on bridge of nose)

Bunnies are cute, but bunny lines, not so much. Bunny lines are the fine lines and wrinkles that form on the sides of and across the bridge of your nose. Five to 10 units of Botox are used as an off-label treatment for bunny lines, also known as nasalis lines. Dermal fillers are sometimes used, as well, to smooth the lines on the bridge of the nose.

Units of Botox - Bunny Lines and Cobblestone Chin

Cobblestone Chin (dimpled chin)

When we purse our lips or make interesting faces that involve our chins in some form or fashion, little tiny dimple-looking “craters” can appear. We have dubbed these not-so-cute dimples in the chin area “cobblestone chin.”

Botox is used as an off-label treatment to smooth the chin area. On average, two to six units of Botox are used to treat cobblestone chin, also referred to as a dimpled chin. Dermal fillers can also be used for chin contouring to balance and smooth the chin area. Juvederm Voluma is the first and only FDA-approved dermal filler to treat the cheek and chin areas. Juvederm Volux is the first and only FDA-approved dermal filler to treat the jawline. Both Voluma and Volux can be used alone or in combination to treat the chin and jawline areas.

Parenthesis (nasolabial folds around the mouth)

Smiling is attractive. However, the results of repetitive smiling can lead to the formation of wrinkles that run from the bottom corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. These lines are referred to as nasolabial folds, otherwise known as “parenthesis.”

Dermal fillers, like Juvederm Ultra, are an excellent choice to treat parenthesis. Dermal filler treatments in the nasolabial fold area can last from one to two years depending on the type of dermal filler used and the individual’s body chemistry.

1, 11, 111 (frown lines between eyebrows)

Have you heard the question, “Are you a 1, 11, or 111?”

When we frown or furrow our brow, we wrinkle the skin between our eyebrows and above the nose. This area is known as the glabella. With time, that repetitive movement from frowning forms frown lines, or glabellar lines. Frown lines are often referred to as 1, 11, or 111 lines depending on how many wrinkles have formed. Botox is FDA-approved to treat frown lines. An average of 10 to 25 units of Botox is used for the glabella region.

Units of Botox and dermal filler treatments

Dermal fillers and Botox are two of the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox makes you look younger by paralyzing the muscles in which it is injected. Once the muscles are paralyzed, they relax. As the muscles relax, the appearance of lines and wrinkles is improved. Botox takes 5 to 12 days for results to appear. The effects of Botox last four to five months, at which time additional Botox injections are required to maintain results.

Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and fill in lines and wrinkles. Juvederm and Restylane are two popular dermal fillers that are made of Hyaluronic Acid. HA fillers attract water to them once injected, which helps to plump the skin.

Unlike non-HA fillers, HA fillers can be dissolved by an enzyme if you don’t love the results (though with the right injector, you should!). Dermal fillers can last between six months and two years depending on the type of filler used, the area being treated, and an individual’s body chemistry.

Laser treatments

Laser treatments, like the Halo and Broadband Light (BBL), are used to improve the appearance of the skin. They can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of age spots. Laser treatments can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, like those mentioned above.
