If you’re in the market for Botox or Juvederm injections, take your time to learn about the product and select the right provider that you can trust. From there, you want to take the proper steps to prepare for Botox and Juvederm treatments. Read on to learn how to prepare and the steps to take for a successful outcome.

Botox and dermal fillers, like Juvederm, are the two most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments available. Literally millions of people from around the world turn to these two treatments to look and feel their best.

Suppose you’re considering a Botox or Juvederm treatment, or you have an appointment coming up. In that case, you might be wondering how to prepare for Botox and Juvederm injections. No worries! We’ve got you covered as we turn to Nurse Injector and Advanced Practice Nurse Marcy Bouillion for recommendations.

How to prepare for Botox and Juvederm treatments

First things first, if you’re considering your first Botox or Juvederm treatment, you want to ensure you do your homework and select a provider you can trust. To do so, Bouillon provides these pertinent highlights to consider:

  • Learn about Botox and how it works with the body
  • Do your homework to choose the right Botox injector for you
  • Be honest about your medical history
  • Be clear on the results you desire while managing expectations
  • Listen to your provider
  • Know how much you’ll need to keep up with injections/results
  • Review pre and post-treatment info

Learn about Botox and Juvederm and how each works with the body

The better educated and prepared you are when you visit a clinic, the better the results. You are your own best advocate, and you know your face better than anyone else. Make a list of questions about Botox and Juvederm injectable fillers for the face. There is no such thing as a stupid question, especially regarding your health, looks, and cosmetic treatments.

Botox v. Juvederm

Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead and around the eyes to help those muscles relax. With time, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles diminishes. The more you understand how Botox injections work within the muscles, the better equipped you will be to understand possible results and side effects and how to identify the right Botox injector to work with.

Juvederm is a filler that’s injected under the skin to add volume and fill in lines and folds. It’s also used for facial balancing, chin contouring, cheek augmentation, and jaw contouring. Most dermal fillers, like Juvederm, provide immediate results when injected.

Do your homework to choose the right injector for you

One of the best ways to prepare for Botox and Juvederm treatments is to research providers.

As a client, your most critical and important decision when it comes to Botox and Juvederm for the face is choosing the very best skincare and aesthetic provider possible. Find a team of practitioners made up of highly medically trained and certified staff. The more experienced, educated, and well-trained your Botox and dermal fillers practitioners are, the better your results and the happier you will be.

Select a Botox and Juvederm injector backed by hundreds of successful treatments and positive reviews. Consider looking for an Allergan-certified facility, like DermaTouch RN. Allergan is the maker of Botox and Juvederm, so you can more than likely trust the facility with its label.

Be honest about your medical history

Every prescription has potential side effects once it enters your body, including Botox and Juvederm filler injections. Being honest about your medical history can help reduce the risk of experiencing those possible side effects.

Have an idea of the results you desire

When you walk into a Botox or Juvederm provider with an idea of the results you desire, the provider will be in a better position to help you manage expectations and receive the treatment results you’re seeking.

Prioritize your goals. What is most important to you? Do you want plumper cheeks, more luscious lips, or to fill out the folds around your mouth and nose? Being prepared is key and will help eliminate confusion for you.

Listen to your provider

Once you find a provider you trust, it’s essential that you listen to their expertise to guide you in managing expectations and help you understand how the products work and impact your appearance. It’s also best to stick to a single provider once you find one you love, vs. provider hop, which can lead to inconsistent results.

Know how much you’ll need to keep up with injections and desired results

If you love your Botox and Juvederm treatments, which is likely to happen, you need to know how much to budget to maintain results. Botox wears off in about three to four months, so you need additional injections to maintain results around that time.

Juvederm fillers last for 6 to 24 months, depending on the type of Juvederm filler used, the area being treated, and individual body chemistry. More filler will be needed over time to maintain results.

If it’s your first time for filler, consider a gradual progression vs. getting too much filler at one time

Once you choose your professional practitioner, start off slowly. It is better to have Juvederm fillers for the face administered in progressive, gentle steps—sometimes, it’s better to have too little “work done” than too much. You can always add dermal facial fillers and improve your look gradually and naturally.

Review and closely follow pre- and post-treatment info

Always follow any pre and post-treatment information provided to you by your provider. In the next section, we get into specifics of the steps to take for an upcoming Botox or Juvederm treatment.

Steps to take for your upcoming Botox treatment

First, it’s best to schedule a Botox treatment at least three to four weeks before any special occasion or event since it takes up to two weeks for optimal results, and you might need a touch-up. Otherwise, Bouillon recommends you prepare for Botox treatments by doing the following:

  • Preferably, come in with a clean face and be prepared for some light cleansing to ensure all make-up is removed.
  • Avoid the following specifically 12 to 24 hours prior to the day of your scheduled treatment to help reduce or avoid bruising:
    • Taking any NSAIDS or certain supplements, such as fish oil and turmeric
    • Drinking alcohol
    • Foods containing garlic
  • Be sure to hydrate! Drink plenty of water, preferably several days leading up to your appointment to better prepare your skin for treatment.
  • Try to avoid waxing, bleaching, or tweezing the face to help avoid unnecessary irritation.
  • If you bruise easily, try taking an Arnica anti-bruise supplement a few days prior to your treatment. You can also continue taking it to prevent or reduce bruising and swelling for a few days after treatment. Arnica comes in a small tablet form and is a very natural remedy to significantly reduce your chance of bruising. You can get it at places like HEB, Walgreens, and Amazon.

Steps to take for your upcoming Juvederm treatment

There are several steps to consider leading up to your Juvederm treatment, some of which are comparable to the steps required leading up to your Botox treatment. One of the most critical things to consider, according to Bouillon, is the timing of any dental treatments of vaccinations and your Juvederm treatment.

“You want to avoid dental procedures at least two weeks prior to and following your Juvederm treatment to avoid potential complications, such as swelling,” shares Bouillon.

It’s also important that you inform your injector of any upcoming events.

“It’s essential to inform your provider of any big upcoming events or occasions, like a wedding or awards ceremony. Although most results are immediate, the filler does take up to two weeks to ‘settle’ for final results,” shares Bouillion, “We always do our best to meet your expectations, and having treatments done a few weeks to a couple of months in advance of large events is preferred, when possible.”

Here are additional tips Bouillion recommends to prepare for an optimal Juvederm treatment:

  • To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid the following 12 to 24 hours prior to the day of your scheduled treatment:
    • NSAIDS
    • Alcohol consumption
    • Certain supplements, like fish oil and tumeric
    • Foods containing garlic
  • On the day of treatment, try to avoid exfoliating and certain products that can be irritating to the skin, such as retinol or glycolic acids.
  • Eat! Try to avoid coming in on an empty stomach, as this can sometimes lead to feelings of light-headedness, fainting, etc.
  • Ensure/review allergies, making sure there are no contraindications to lidocaine.
  • Similar to getting Botox, if you are an ‘easy’ bruiser, take an Arnica anti-bruise supplement a few days before and a few days following treatment. This natural remedy can be purchased on Amazon or at places like HEB and Walgreens.
