Did You Know Stress has a Major Impact on Your Skin?

Many don’t realize the following: when we’re developing in the womb, the brain and skin are actually created from the same cells. It’s no surprise, then, that there’s a very strong mind-skin connection after birth. This is one reason why our skin manifests signs of stress, like acne, hair loss, dark circles under the eyes, rashes, and more.

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) reported that 40% of respondents in a 2006 survey said they experienced persistent anxiety and stress in their life on a daily basis. In addition to the symptoms listed above, stress can make our skin look aged, dull, and fatigued. Fortunately, there are cosmetic and aesthetic treatments that can support our skin’s health to combat signs of stress and help it look its best.

Top-of-the-line Skin Care: The right skin care regimen can treat the symptoms of stress that show up on the skin, as well as prevent premature aging. We offer top-of-the-line products that offer proven results from companies like SkinMedica and Obagi at DermaTouch RN.

Laser Therapy: Laser therapy supports collagen stimulation and skin resurfacing. There’s no downtime and many see results after one session. Results vary based on the number of treatments, the area treated, and the individual.

Skin Pen II: The SkinPen II supports the body’s natural ability to produce collagen and elastin with little to no downtime. The result is healthier, more youthful looking skin.

Bio-Identical Hormones: As we age, our naturally occurring hormone levels often decrease, which can lead to fatigue, hair loss, and other unwanted symptoms that can contribute to stress. Stress can also impact our hormone levels. Treatment with bio-identical hormones can support the body by increasing hormone levels, and in turn, help heal the body from the inside out. DermaTouch RN is pleased to offer BioTE hormone replacement therapy for patients.

Chemical Peels and Facials: Chemical Peels and facials are great options to support the health of the skin. They can help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, acne, age spots, and other skin imperfections, many of which can be a result of stress.

7 Tips to Prevent and Repair Sun Damage in Houston, TX

Last week we shared how to identify skin cancer on your body by knowing your ABCs. Today, we’re going to share how to prevent sun cancer, so you hopefully don’t become a statistic!

We’re all born with baby skin that is soft and supple. After birth, depending on our biology and environmental factors we’re exposed to, our skin will age at different rates. The better you take care of your skin early on, the healthier your skin will remain as you age. The sun causes some 90% of skin again per the Skin Cancer Foundation.  The good news is, with the right measures, again caused by the sun can be prevented and treated.

How can I prevent sun damage?

  1. Be cautious of the sun between 10 am and 3 pm. The sun’s rays are considered the strongest during this timeframe of the day.
  2. Wear sunscreen with at least an SPF 30. In addition to an SPF of 30, The American Academy of Dermatology suggests also finding a sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” on it. You also want a sunscreen that is water-resistant. Reapply every 2 hours throughout the day and right after you swim or sweat.
  3. Wear protective clothing. Hats, long sleeves, and pants are all supportive in protecting your skin from the sun. They also sell sun protective clothing for those who spend long hours in the sun.
  4. Forgo the tanning bed. Some states have banned tanning beds for anyone under the age of 18 due to the harm they’re considered to cause. The ultraviolet rays emitted by tanning beds can damage your skin the same way the sun’s rays can when you don’t protect your skin.

How can I treat sun damage?

Continuing on with our list, if you’ve already gotten burnt or spent too much time in the sun and it shows on your skin, then you can take action to minimize the amount of damage caused.

  1. Purchase high-quality skin care products. Choose to wear a moisturizer with SPF in it to start, and then choose a regimen that is both preventative and reactive to help you minimize the appearance of aging. At DermaTouch RN, we offer top-of-the-line products from reputable companies like SkinMedica and Obagi to ensure our patients get the results they desire.
  2. Treat a burn right away. If you get a sunburn, then treat it right away with aloe vera gel (fresh from the plant is best) or a high-quality after-sun lotion.
  3. Seek out reputable cosmetic service facilities, like DermaTouch RN. Non-invasive cosmetic treatments, like laser light therapy and Skin Pen II treatments, can do wonders to repair photo-aging and sun damage of the skin. We offer a variety of laser therapies and the Skin Pen II treatment at DermaTouch RN.

It’s true that a little bit of sun is good for you, as the sun helps to activate certain cellular functions of the body, including the production of Vitamin D. At the same time, be wise and use caution as to not get burned. Doing so can help to prevent sun cancer and premature aging of the skin.

Know Your ABCs to Identify Skin Cancer

© Alexander Glagolev | Dreamstime Photos

With summer officially here and many of us already taking advantage of “fun in the sun,” we wanted to take a moment to remind you to be safe when it comes to your skin and the sun. Per the Skin Cancer Foundation, there are more than 5 million non-melanoma skin cancer cases in the United States alone. Of that 5 million, 3 million people are treated. That’s a lot of people impacted by skin cancer! Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the most treatable and curable forms of cancer, and the earlier it’s caught, the better.

The ABCs of Skin Cancer

To help you identify skin cancer on your body, it’s important to do regular scans at least once a month. If you need, have someone you trust to look over your back, since it’s not as easy to access or see alone. As you scan your body, you want to look for any moles—flat or raised—that look suspicious or have changed in any way. Consider the following during your exam:

(A) Asymmetry – One side of the mole looks different than the other side.

(B) Border – The border of the mole is irregular in shape.

(C) Color – The color of the mole is not the same throughout.

(D) Diameter – The mole’s diameter is larger than 6mm.

(E) Evolving Size – The mole has changed color, size, or shape.

If any of the above is true for any of the moles on your body, make an appointment with your physician. Again, the sooner skin cancer is caught, the easier it is to cure, so don’t hesitate if you have any concerns at all.

Non-invasive cosmetic treatments can help repair sun damage.

At DermaTouch RN, we have a variety of treatments that can help repair sun damage, which can help prevent skin cancer in the future. For example, skin resurfacing with laser treatments is a great way to repair the skin, as well as induce collagen production to help the skin look healthier overall. The Skin Pen II treatment also supports repairing the skin from sun damage. We also have great skin care products to prevent and treat sun damage, as well.

It’s important to us that we pull together as a community to educate about skin care, including skin cancer and how to protect the skin from it. Contact us today for a free consultation so we can have an honest discussion about the health of your skin and ways we can support you in treating sun damage or any of your skin care concerns.

In our next couple of blogs, we’ll share more about how to prevent sun damage and skin cancer, as well as taking care of your skin during the summer months, in general. Stay tuned!

Try the SkinPen II Treatment for Younger Looking Skin at DermaTouch RN!

© Olga Semicheva | Dreamstime

Many of us are in the market for younger looking skin, and we want the results without a lot of risks or going under the knife. Fortunately, there are several cosmetic treatments available to improve the appearance of the skin and turn back the hands of time. At DermaTouch RN, we offer facials, laser therapy, fillers, Botox, and more for our patients. We also offer the SkinPen II treatment that has resulted in many happy clients walking in and out of our doors!

What is the SkinPen II, and how does it work?

The SkinPen II supports the skin’s natural ability to produce collagen and elastin, resulting in healthier looking skin after treatment with little to no downtime. The treatment works by using tiny needles to create microscopic channels in the skin that help to accelerate the skin’s repair process—allowing for the production of new collagen and elastin. This then helps to improve scarring, reduce sun damage, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and create an overall healthier complexion. It can be used on the arms, hands, neck, face, abdomen, décolleté, and back.

What can I expect during and after the procedure?

During treatment, a thin layer of serum is applied to the skin. The practitioner then uses a gentle motion to glide the pen over the repair area. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes, depending on the amount of skin damage and the size of the area being treated.

After treatment, some patients might experience slight redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, for two to four days. Patients should avoid wearing make-up during this period of time.

When will I see results with the SkinPen II?

Once the redness and swelling go away, many patients see results immediately, with optimal results showing in three to six months after treatment. Results are dependent upon the severity of damage treated and the number of treatments applied. For optimal results, a series of three treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart is ideal. For more severe skin damage or deeper wrinkles, a series of six to eight sessions might be recommended.

Is the SkinPen II right for you?

One of the great things about the SkinPen II is that it works well for a variety of skin types. Contact us today to find out if a SkinPen II treatment regimen is right for you!

In the meantime, you can read more about the Skin Pen II on our SkinPen II web page

Getting Wedding Ready to Look Your Best (Within Four Months or Less)!

It’s that time of year. Weddings are in the air! If you’re getting married in the near future, you, of course, want to look and feel your best for what’s considered to be one of the most important days of your life! Or, maybe you’re the mother or the bride or groom, and you too, want to look your best. At DermaTouch RN, we’re here to help with our pre-wedding suggestions that we’ve outlined below. You’ll be able to show up for the big day with your head held high!

More than four months out:

If you still have some time before the big day arises, consider Ultherapy to lift the chin, neck and brow area, while also smoothing the lines on the chest. Ultherapy is a way to lift without going under the knife. This FDA-approved treatment is non-invasive and supports the body in producing and regenerating collagen production through the use of ultrasound. One great thing about Ultherapy is the images that are taken before and after treatment that prove it’s working!

It’s can take two to three months for maximum results to appear, so you want to come in at least four months before the wedding day for a consultation and treatment.

Two to four months out:

Facials and Chemical Peels

We all want that beautiful glow, especially on our wedding day. Facials are great skin treatments to get rid of skin impurities to refine and hydrate the skin. Chemical Peels are a more intense treatment to consider, as well. The appearance of fine lines, acne, rosacea, and overall skin texture and tone can be improved with facials and chemical peels. It often takes a series of facials or peels for maximum results, which is why you want to come in at least two to four months out (four is best) to allow time between each treatment.

Botox

Get rid of those fine lines on the forehead and crows feet around the eyes with Botox before the big day. It can take up to a week for Botox to work, and results last four to six months, depending on the patient, areas treated, and the number of units used. You want to allow enough time for touch-ups, so at least a month out is best for Botox.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Voluma can help add volume to the face and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, as well as the depth of nasolabial folds. To allow for touch-ups and to get the results you’re looking for over time, you want to have fillers injected at least two to three months out, if not more. It can take more filler than one realizes for desired results, which is also why from a budget perspective, giving yourself more time is helpful.

At DermaTouch RN, we love helping the bride-to-be and mother-of-the-bride (or groom) feel and look their best. Contact us today to schedule a free consultation to put a game plan together to help you prep for your big day. So, when the big day comes, you’ll be able to walk into the room with confidence!

Purchase Skin Care Products from a Reputable MedSpa or Physician – Not Amazon or eBay

In today’s world, we’re often attempting to save money. And sites like eBay and Amazon have supported us in this attempt. It’s the savvy shopper that always turns to sites like Amazon and eBay to see if they can find items—anything from clothes, supplements, cosmetics, books and much more—for less than retail or what they might pay for them elsewhere.

Regardless of what you’re purchasing, you want to be sure to check out reviews for the companies you’re purchasing from. When purchasing on eBay and Amazon, they often have verified suppliers that are backed by sites like Amazon and eBay to give you some peace of mind. Even so, anytime you’re purchasing cosmetic or skin care products, always use caution!

Many cosmetic companies only sell to establishments with a Physician on board.

When you’re purchasing cosmetic products from companies such as SkinMedica and Obaji, purchase them from a reputable clinic or MedSpa, like DermaTouch RN, with a physician to on board. If there isn’t a physician on board, then the establishment is likely selling the products illegally, because such companies only sell to very specific establishments.

This is in part why it’s very easy for organizations to illegally sell products online—people don’t think to verify the establishment or if the seller is sticking to the Company’s standards for the products they’re selling. Check out our blog, “Beware of Cosmetic and Skin Care Product Fraud” for more information.

Safety is a priority.

When you purchase products online, there is no telling what you’re getting, especially when purchasing from sellers outside of the United States. You’re risking your health, safety, and not getting the results promised. Oftentimes, you’re simply wasting your money, because the products are diluted or not what they say they are.

Purchase from DermaTouch RN, a provider you can trust.

At DermaTouch RN, when you purchase our products, you can trust that you’re getting the high-quality skin care and cosmetics with the positive results you desire and expect. We carry reputable lines like SkinMedica, Clarisonic, Obagi, and La Bella Donna Makeup that leave our patients happy and satisfied.

Safety should always come first. Contact us at 281.895.9090 for more information about fraudulent products that might put you at risk. While you’re at it, schedule a free consultation to test our product lines to see what ones you might just fall in love with!

Celebrate Men’s Health Month at DermaTouch RN!

June is Men’s Health Month, a month “anchored by a Congressional health education program” and  “celebrated across the country with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities,” per the organization’s website.

Why Men’s Health Month?

Per the Men’s Health Month website, “The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This month gives health care provider, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The response has been overwhelming with thousands of awareness activities in the USA and around the globe.”

Of course, men’s health should be a focus all-year-through, not just in June, though bringing awareness to it for an entire month is a positive thing to do given our busy lives these days. At DermaTouch RN, we support events that truly support health and well-being, and Men’s Health Month does that.

Celebrate Men’s Health Month with DermaTouch RN.

Many believe MedSpas and aesthetic services are for women only, though we see more and more men walk through our doors every week. Men care about their appearance as much as women do in many cases, and when men feel good about how they look, it shows.

At DermaTouch RN, we’re also about feeling good from the inside out, so we take a whole person and body approach to what we do. If you feel good on the inside, it shows on the outside. DermaTouch RN is here to support you in assessing what you need for overall health and well-being, including aesthetic and cosmetic services to address skin care concerns. We offer Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma, as well as fat reduction treatments and services to treat skin conditions such as rosacea, skin tags, and more for men and women alike.

We also offer bio-identical hormones for overall well-being. As we age, our natural hormone levels often decrease, causing fatigue, mood swings, and other undesirable symptoms; for men, we offer Biote testosterone pellets to support healthy testosterone levels to help avoid those undesirable symptoms.

In the month of June, we’re also celebrating Father’s Day with a Botox special.  Those who bring the special man in their life to DermaTouch RN for Botox will receive 30 units of Botox at $9.00 a unit for him or herself and his or her special man. Plus, each individual will receive 10 free units of Botox!

Celebrate Men’s Health Month with us! Stop in or contact us today to set up a free consultation for yourself or the important men in your life to assess your and/or their health and skin care concerns and possible treatment options. Enjoy our Botox special while you’re at it!

Did You Know about the Dysport Rewards Program: ASPIRE Galderma Rewards?

In 2009, Dysport came on the market as the second FDA approved neurotoxin for cosmetic use, being the first competitor on the market for Botox. Many are familiar with Botox and its rewards program, and though many are now familiar with Dysport, they might not be familiar with the rewards program for purchasing Dysport—ASPIRE Galderma Rewards. In fact, when a customer signs up for the ASPIRE program, they instantly receive a $20 treatment certificate that can be used that same day!

What are the perks of the ASPIRE Galderma Rewards program?

As a member of the ASPIRE Galderma Rewards program, you’ll not only receive the $20 coupon upon sign-up, but you’ll also:

  • Earn points with every Galderma aesthetic treatment.
  • Earn points for referring friends.
  • Earn points for taking monthly beauty quizzes.
  • Redeem points for treatments, or cash back to use in Rewards Boutique, with different options from companies such as Nordstrom, Amazon, Sephora, and more.

How does Dysport Work?

Dysport is a neurotoxin — Botulinum Type A—used to relax muscles that cause frown lines on the forehead and crows feet around the eyes. In theory, effects can be seen within two to five days and last for four to six months. Results vary based on the treatment area, the number of units used, and the chemistry of the patient.

For more information about Dysport, refer to our Dysport Q&A.

Stop in or contact us today to set up your free consultation to determine if Dysport is right for you. You can even register for the ASPIRE Galderma Rewards program while you’re at it to receive your $20 instant coupon to use the same day!

Botox vs. Dysport – What’s the Difference?

You’re likely familiar with Botox, which has been on the market for cosmetic use since 2002. A few years later in 2009, Dysport was also FDA approved for cosmetic use, being the first competitor on the market for Botox. There is now an additional competitor to Botox and Dysport—Xeomin—that came on the market in the past few years, though at DermaTouch RN, we stick with Botox and Dysport because it allows us to pass more savings on to the client when we purchase more of a particular product from suppliers.

We have some clients who love and stick with Botox, and some who enjoy the effects of Dysport better. Everyone’s different and can respond differently to different treatments.

Botox and Dysport are very similar.

Both Botox and Dysport are Neurotoxins — Botulinum Type A—that is used to relax muscles that cause crows feet and frown lines on the forehead. They’ve both been in use for years and have similar effects when used on patients.

How do Dysport and Botox differ?

Dysport is a smaller molecule, requiring more of it to get a similar result to Botox. Dysport also costs less, though due to the requirement of more units, the cost saving compared to Botox is minimal.

Dysport has a slightly quicker effect that can be seen when compared to Botox (in theory, 2-5 days vs 4-6 days for Botox). Dysport also spreads to a wider area, or diffuses more, which can be a good thing in certain areas of the forehead, and not such a good thing in others areas. Each client is different as to how they respond to the treatment.

The skill of the injector is more important than the product used!

Whether you’re using  Dysport or Botox, what’s most important is finding a skilled injector who understands face structure and how each product functions in the body.  At DermaTouch RN, we have injected literally 1000s of vials of Dysport and Botox combined and are confident in the results our practitioners provide.

We believe educating our patients is a priority. For more information on Botox and Dysport, refer to our Botox Q&A and Dysport Q&A.

Stop in or contact us today to set up your free consultation today to determine if Botox or Dysport is right for you!
