We’ve been discussing these past few weeks one of the hottest body sculpting treatments available, nonsurgical body contouring SculpSure® developed by CynoSure. In this final part of the discussion, we’ll compare the differences between SculpSure and CoolSculpting® in permanently eliminating excess fat cells (adipose fat) in those stubborn areas – for both men and women.
Known as the “25-minute body contouring” treatment, SculpSure leverages the expertise gained through the successful development and commercial launch of such products as SmartLipo™ and Cellulaze™.
During the SculpSure non-invasive lipolysis procedure, the adipose tissue is heated to a temperature of between 42° and 47° C (107.6° to 116.6° F), using a hyperthermic laser – a hands-free device with a flexible applicator designed to treat multiple areas of the body. The 1060 nm wavelength’s specific affinity for adipose tissue, coupled with minimal absorption in the dermis, allows SculpSure to efficiently treat target areas in just 25 minutes. There is no damage to the dermal tissue and Contact Cooling is applied for the patient’s comfort. The fat cells are then naturally expelled from the body.
Unlike weight loss, in which fat cells remain and have the potential to assume position at any time in those vulnerable areas, the fat cells that are destroyed during the SculpSure procedure are permanently eliminated from the body.
There is no downtime and results are visible in as little as six weeks, with optimal results in just 12 weeks. The Sculpsure procedure has a 24% fat reduction rate of success and a 90% satisfaction rate among patients (1,2).
Unlike CoolSculpting, which is limited to only certain skin types, the light-based technology of SculpSure can be used on all skin types.
In abstracts presented at the 2015 annual conference of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, clinical data from approximately 100 subjects treated with SculpSure in multicenter studies at two U.S. sites revealed that researchers saw a statistically significant reduction in adipose layer thickness, six and 12 weeks post-treatment (2,3).
SculpSure is intended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less.
The process of CoolSculpting entails the delivery of “controlled cooling,” known as Cryolipolysis®, to the fat cells beneath the skin. A gel pad and applicator are placed on the target area and the fat cells are essentially frozen. The cells then die and are naturally eliminated from the body over time. While CoolSculpting targets specific areas including the flank/side, the stomach, and the outer and inner thigh, it is restricted in use – limited by skin type.
Patients undergoing a CoolSculpting procedure may experience pulling, tugging or pinching of the applicator and a lingering “dimpling” affect may be visible for some time following a session. Bruising or redness at the site of the applicator have also been reported, though are eventually diminished. Most patients require more than one CoolSculpting treatment, with visible results in approximately three to six weeks.
